TIKAL
The crown jewel of Guatemala is surely Tikal, an ancient Maya City and one of the greatest archaeological sites in the New World. Tikal is located in the north-central region of El Peten, that was once the heartland of the Maya Civilization. The temples and plazas of Tikal are surrounded by the 222-square mile Parque Nacional Tikal, and given it’s protected status it is also one of the greatest places in Central America to see wildlife.

Tikal was established around 200 B.C. and thrived for more than a millennium. The great temples that tower above the surrounding rainforest were once the setting of elaborate ceremonies conducted by Mayan priests. The region of Tikal was a center of political power until it’s demise around 900 A.D. when it would be reclaimed by the jungle for another thousand years.

ANTIGUA
A short drive west from Guatemala City, Antigua is one of the most charming and beautiful colonial cities in Central America. The city was founded in 1543 and was once the capital of the region that is now Central America, making it one of the greatest cities in the New World along with Lima and Mexico City.

Antigua is a strikingly beautiful city, cobblestone streets, grand colonial architecture and the central plaza are complimented by the rolling green mountains nearby. Given it’s popularity numerous restaurants and hotels offer excellent cuisine and modern creature comforts, and local markets and shops offer beautiful crafts and colorful textiles.
